3 Spices to Help Curb Your Sugar Cravings

Man with sugar cravings

As you’ve probably seen from many of our posts and articles, we are always trying to gently encourage our readers to cut down on sugar. Let’s take a quick recap of the reasons why it’s so important to cut down on sugar.

Excess sugar consumption has been linked to:

And these are only just a few risks. There are many, many more health concerns associated with eating too much sugar.

All that said, when you’ve made an agreement with yourself that you would like to cut down or completely give up sugar, it can be very hard at the beginning to curb those cravings.

So we would like to suggest some helpful herbs to assist you on your ‘quitting sugar’ journey.

Cinnamon

This naturally sweet spice has been used for culinary and medicinal purposes for thousands of years. Loaded with important compounds such as cinnamaldehyde, cinnamic acid, and cinnamate, this delicious spice is one of the most beneficial and health-promoting spices on earth.

Cinnamon is packed full of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties and is anti-microbial and anti-diabetic with an ability to reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer.

The reason why cinnamon is an excellent spice at curbing sugar cravings is because of its potent polyphenols that help to control blood glucose levels. This regulation of blood sugar levels reduces the insulin spike after eating, which means you will be less likely to overeat and, therefore, overconsume sugar.

Cinnamon has such wonderful properties that we have included it as an important ingredient in our all-natural tooth and gum formula. You can check out all the great benefits of cinnamon for oral health in our blog, “Why Cinnamon is Taking Over the Oral Health World“.

How to use cinnamon: cinnamon is great in tea or smoothies or sprinkled on plain yogurt, curries, and veggies.

Turmeric

Turmeric has such an extensive list of healing benefits, that we wrote a whole article about it. Check out “Why Everybody Needs Turmeric on their Spice Rack,” to explore the many benefits this golden spice has to offer.

So, why is turmeric so great at curbing those sugar cravings?

This colorful Indian spice contains substances called curcuminoids, which help to block carbohydrate absorption. Clinical data shows that curcumin has a powerful effect on blocking the production of alpha-glucosidase – an enzyme present on cells lining your small intestine. Alpha-glucosidase converts starches and refined sugar to simple sugars (monosaccharides) for intestinal absorption. By blocking this enzyme, sugar absorption is delayed and blood sugar is stabilized, thereby warding off sugar cravings!

How to use turmeric: you can either take turmeric as a daily supplement or use it in all your favorite curry dishes and sauces.

Cloves

Worth their weight in gold in 17th – 18th century Europe, cloves continue to hold great importance in the natural healing world and have been used to treat various health concerns for thousands of years.

One of their biggest assets is their stomach-soothing and sugar regulating properties.

Along with many beneficial antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and anthocyanins, cloves also contain an active component called eugenol, a compound with potent anti-inflammatory and antiseptic effects.

There has been a lot of research to suggest that cloves help those with type-2 diabetes manage their blood sugar levels. In one study, 13 healthy volunteers were given clove extract for one month to observe their glucose levels. The results showed a significant glucose reduction and inhibited alpha-glucosidase activity.

Like turmeric, this reduced alpha-glucosidase activity helps to stabalize blood sugar and, therefore, help curb those cravings.

How to use cloves: Brew some cloves in tea (or cinnamon, milk, and other spices to make a chai) or sprinkle over veggies, sauces, and stews
