Obstacles point you in the RIGHT direction

At some point in our lives, most of us have experienced some kind of negative ordeal, crisis or painful setback. But what if all of these troubling turns in life were actually guiding us to something much more spectacular than we initially thought? What if each obstacle we face in life was a wonderful opportunity, a possibility, a gateway to something better, another path lighting the way to what we are really wanting?

What if obstacles are actually steering us away from the wrong path and towards the right one?

Contrast is clarifying

Isabelle Dunkeson, the creator of Good-Gums, is a firm believer that the ‘stumbling blocks’ of our life experience are actually the very things we need in order to guide us to where we need to go.

“Trouble is transportation: it points you in a different direction. It’s about looking at what you perceive as a stumbling block as an opportunity. It’s about changing how we are perceiving what’s happening.”

We know, in the midst of a disaster, it’s not always easy to see it as a ‘guiding light’. Even Isabelle admits, “I lose faith and trust every 5 minutes”, but it is her ‘trust in the goodness’ and her belief that we are being guided to this goodness that has helped her to be the influential woman she is today; saving thousands of people from painful and expensive gum surgery.

Following Isabelle’s life story really is a reminder of what magic can happen when we let go and surrender to life, and allow ourselves to be guided by an inner knowing that is far more intelligent than what our fearful minds are telling us.

When something unpleasantly, unexpected happens, our instant reaction is to shout ‘NO’ at it! ‘This can’t happen!’, ‘I don’t want this!’ ‘This is so unfair!’. When we resist the reality of what is happening to us, it’s like slamming the door shut on what could potentially be the answer to everything we’ve been asking for.

“Accept the situation as though you had chosen it yourself, then act”
-Eckhart Tolle

The mind believes things ‘should’ be a certain way in order for us to be happy; if we don’t have the health, the wealth, the clothes, the car, the house, the relationship, we can’t be happy. It is only when we begin to question the beliefs of the mind that we can shift from a scarcity mindset to an abundance mindset. And when we begin to feel the shift, that’s when the magic happens!

“There Is No Truth, There Is Only Perception”
 Gustave Flaubert

Isabelle says that whatever is happening in her life, “I always come back to the big T. TRUST” Trust goes beyond the mind, it’s about believing in something before we can see it, it’s about realizing and understanding the perfection in all things, in all experiences and that everything is leading us to a greater good. We know, this isn’t always easy, especially when our minds are telling us a different story. But we believe developing a trust in life and in our own inner guidance is a skill definitely worth mastering.

When Isabelle was first told by her dentist that she needed gum surgery and that her teeth were likely to fall out, instead of responding as many of us would in that situation, which would be to PANIC and spend our life’s savings on dental surgery, she instead learned to come back to the big T.

“I had to step away from what I was being told to do and have the courage to trust. So I started reading all these books and realized that the body has an amazing ability to heal itself”.

Luckily, Isabelle had a great understanding of natural medicine, plants, herbs, and other such natural healing methods, so it wasn’t a stretch for her to put together a formula she felt would work to cure her gum problems.

Her ability to trust in a moment when it felt like fate was against her, was what led her down the path of helping thousands of people worldwide with their gum problems.

Our body is a living miracle.

Have you ever stopped to consider the tiny miracles that are taking place inside of your body every single day? There is so much happening, in perfect harmony and balance, that it’s almost impossible to comprehend.

Here are just a few tiny miracles to make you flutter in awe at your body’s amazing intelligence:

  • Your heart pumps approximately 2000 gallons (7571 liters) of blood throughout the body every single day and beats over 100,000 times a day. That’s a mighty job for a fist-sized muscle!
  • You take on average 20,000 breaths a day and you don’t have to think about any one of them!
  • Your brain is constantly working. On average you think about between 50,000-70,000 thoughts a day. That’s between 35-50 thoughts a minute!
  • The cells in your stomach lining naturally produce an alkaline substance that neutralizes stomach acid. Without this, your stomach would digest itself as some of the acids are strong enough to dissolve metals.
  • You blink on average 28000-30000 times a day. This voluntary reflex causes your eyelids to spread a cocktail of protective oils across the surface of the eye to keep your eyes clean and moist.
  • Red blood cells take about 60 seconds to do a circuit of your entire body as they deliver oxygen and keep your body energized. Each cell lasts about 40 days before being replaced by a younger model.
  • Your salivary glands produce approximately 1.5 liters of saliva a day in order to flush away bacteria and help you digest food. That’s a whole lotta dribble!
  • The most amazing thing of all is that your cells are regenerating every single day without you having to do anything. This means you have new skin every 3 weeks, new nails every 5- 10 months and a new heart every 10 years. Your whole body completely replaces itself every 7-15 years! Fascinating!

The intelligence of the body knows how to keep us alive without us having to do anything, and it is this very same intelligence that guides us through life.

When we are faced with an obstacle, it’s as if life is giving us a gift, a gift to think differently, to try something new and see where it takes us. Isabelle explains,

‘’We self-sabotage and we don’t know we’re doing it. We are blinded. This journey has taught me to let go and surrender to life, and to be guided by an inner knowing that is far more intelligent than what my fearful mind is telling me.’’

So instead of fighting against an unwanted situation, see what happens when you make the choice to surrender to it, to not resist it, to begin perceiving it as a gift in which you can begin contemplating new ideas and different ways of thinking.

Stop that fearful, incessant, monkey-mind for just a moment and see what amazing ideas and insights are waiting for you.

So how do I know if it’s my fearful mind or my inner guidance talking?

You will know by how you feel. The thought or idea that comes from the fearful mind will usually feel restrictive, panicked, evading and anxious. It has an addictive, surface level quality to it and is usually accompanied by a stressful, anxiety-driven need to ‘do something now’ and ‘act quick’.

Your inner guidance is a voice that feels clear, effortless and expansive, and comes to you when you are in a calm and relaxed state. It feels like inspiration, excitement, eagerness. Of course, following your inner guidance can sometimes feel a little scary, but we’d like to instead call that feeling – excitement! It’s the same feeling you get when you’re just about to go traveling to a country you’ve never been before, or start a course you’ve always wanted to do, or get married to the person you love, or perform on stage for the first time. It has the feeling of expansiveness and exhilaration that comes from trusting in the unknown.
