Hurrah! Another herbal remedy for treating teeth and gum issues. We really do love sharing with our customers all the different natural approaches we discover for oral health. And we hope you do too!

Another wonderful wonder plant that we would like to give a big shout out to is sage.

Why is sage so great

Sage contains over 60 beneficial compounds and substances, which tackle a variety of different health problems. And in the case of gum disease, sage may even help to significantly decrease inflammation of the gums.

But it’s not just its anti-inflammatory properties that make this evergreen shrub such a hit with our gums. Sage has potent antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and antimicrobial properties that help destroy cavity-causing bacteria and neutralize microbes that promote dental plaque.

Sage also contains healing compounds that accelerate wound healing. This makes the plant a great remedy for soothing sore, swollen and bleeding gums.

The studies...

There are many studies to show how effective sage is at tackling cavity-causing bacteria and healing teeth and gum related issues.

In one study, a sage-based mouthwash was shown to effectively kill the bacteria Streptococcus mutans, which is the main bacteria in dental plaque responsible for the development of cavities.

In one test-tube study, a sage-based essential oil was shown to kill and stop the spread of Candida albicans, a fungus also linked to cavities.

One review noted that sage has aromatic, spasmolytic, antiseptic astringent properties that may treat throat infections, dental abscesses, infected gums, and mouth ulcers.

How to use sage for dental health

A tea made from two tablespoons of dried or fresh sage is said to provide relief from teeth and gum related problems such as toothache and sore or swollen gums.

Brew the sage for a few minutes in boiling water. Wait to cool for 10 minutes. Then swish in the mouth for 30 seconds and spit.

A sage tea bag can also be placed on the gums to soothe the aching or inflamed area.

Sage essential oil has been shown to have strong antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties that destroy and prevent the growth of bacteria in our mouths. Sage oil can also help to accelerate wound healing and prevent swollen and bleeding gums.

You can create your own mouth rinse by using 2-3 drops of sage essential oil with 1/2 cup of water. Swish the rinse in your mouth after brushing your teeth and spit.
