Two Christmas ingredients that could save your gums

The holiday season is upon us, so we’d like to take this opportunity to give a big shout-out to two Christmas ingredients that we believe to be the best when it comes to your oral health. In fact, we’re such a fan of these ingredients that we’ve included them in our all-natural solution for gum health.

The first on our gum-saving Christmas list is sizzling cinnamon.

Cinnamon

Derived from the bark of the Cinnamomum Verum tree, this delicious sweet spice has been used for culinary and medicinal purposes for thousands of years. The bark contains many important compounds, such as cinnamic acid, cinnamaldehyde, and cinnamate, which make cinnamon one of the most beneficial and health-promoting spices on the planet!

Cinnamon is an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and anti-diabetic and has even been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease and cancer.

So why is cinnamon good for the gums?

We believe that cinnamon takes the crown when it comes to the best spice for healing gums. And we’re not the only ones that think so – cinnamon has been traditionally used in toothpowder for hundreds of years.

Some studies suggest that the compounds in cinnamon may protect against certain strains of bacteria that cause tooth decay, cavities, bad breath, and gum disease and “could be beneficial in caries and periodontal disease prevention.”

Cinnamaldehyde, one of the main active components of cinnamon, has potent antifungal and antibacterial properties, which help to naturally combat bacteria associated with bad breath and gum disease.

And let’s not forget about its incredible anti-inflammatory properties, which make this super spice a perfect antidote to sore gums. Research shows that various types of flavonoids in cinnamon are fantastic at relieving swelling and inflammation in the body, and can be used as a great tool for pain management. This is why, for centuries, cinnamon has been used to numb the teeth and gums of teething infants.

Next on our gum-saving Christmas list is magical Myrrh.

Myrrh

Myrrh is a reddish-brown sap from the cuts in trees that are members of the Commiphora species. This tree species typically grows in Africa, Saudi Arabia, and Oman.

There’s a reason why one of the three wise men chose myrrh as the perfect gift to give the newborn baby Jesus – because it’s a very powerful treasure.  This mystical resin dates back thousands of years, and both textual and archaeological evidence suggests it’s been used for medical purposes throughout history.

Myrrh’s powerful healing powers were highly regarded by royalty, nobles, and wealthier people from Greece to India and at one point was even considered more valuable than gold!

So why is myrrh good for the gums?

Myrrh, meaning ‘bitter’ in Arabic, is widely considered by herbalists and practitioners of Chinese medicine to be one of the most effective substances for sore gums. Even in the west, myrrh is becoming more and more recognized for its astringent and antiseptic properties as well as its ability to promote healing.

In addition to its antiseptic, antimicrobial, and astringent properties, myrrh is used to repair damaged tissue and stimulate circulation in mucous membrane tissue (including the gums). In fact, this soothing sap has historically been used by itself to soothe and heal swollen gums, canker sores, sore throats and sinus infections.

In ancient times, myrrh – often used in combination with frankincense – was burned in places of worship to purify the air and prevent the spreading of contagious diseases. Research today shows that myrrh is very effective at killing bacteria and stimulating the immune system to produce white blood cells, which are also responsible for killing bacteria.

Myrrh and Cinnamon are vital ingredients in Good-Gums

Myrrh’s incredible antiseptic, antimicrobial, astringent, and bacteria-busting properties and cinnamon’s anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and disease-fighting properties are essential for strong, healthy gums, which is why we’ve included these healing ingredients in our natural tooth powder!

Along with myrrh and cinnamon, Good-Gums powder includes baking soda, French grey sea salt, cranberry, peppermint, vitamin C, and citrus bioflavonoids. Together, these ingredients help with the breakdown of plaque and provide critical minerals essential for building strong tooth enamel and keeping your gums healthy.
