Why You Shouldn’t Brush Your Teeth Immediately After Eating

We know, it almost seems counterintuitive, but brushing your teeth straight after eating could be one of the worst things you do to your teeth.

Your tooth enamel acts like a protective shield to your teeth and is the hardest part of the human body – even stronger than bone! But if there’s one thing that has the power to destroy this superhuman structure, it’s acid!

When we eat, our teeth are actually at their weakest state, due to the high levels of acids being released from the food we’re eating.

When the pH balance in our mouth tips from alkaline to acid, this can spark off the demineralization process, where acids begin to attack tooth enamel. This is especially true when ingesting and chewing on highly acidic foods such as citrus fruits, processed or sugary foods.

After eating, your teeth (weakened by the high levels of acids) are at their most fragile and susceptible to damage. This means that brushing your teeth will, in fact, wear away the protective surface of your teeth.

Let saliva do its job

After you eat, your saliva works to flush away food debris and normalize the pH balance of your mouth again. Once your oral flora is restored to its natural, healthy balance, only then is it a good time to brush your teeth.

We recommend waiting at least 30 minutes after eating (an hour if you’ve eaten highly acidic foods) to brush your teeth.

Swishing water around in your mouth first is a good way to remove any excess food debris and further neutralize mouth acids.
